From 7-8:30 PM: "Welcome to Vermont," a documentary by filmmaker and Champlain College faculty member Mira Niagolova about the daily lives of four families from Bosnia, Somalia, Iraq, and Rwanda who have recently resettled in Vermont. Followed by an informal discussion and Q&A.

Please join us for a film screening, discussion and delicious dinner cooked by local chef Farah Akhondi.

The event is at Morgan Room, Aiken Hall. Champlain College

The Vermont Folklife Center and Mira Niagolova present the premiere of 
“Welcome to Vermont: Four Stories of Resettled Identity.” 

The screening is free, and will be preceded by a reception featuring food prepared by cooks from Vermont’s New American communities. 

A panel discussion exploring refugee resettlement in Vermont will follow the film.

Support for Niagolova’s film by the Vermont Folklife Center is part of the organization’s larger mission to call attention to the cultural needs of refugees resettled in the state, and to support the continuity of cultural practices among New American groups in Vermont. Vermont Folklife Center Co-Director and Director of Education, Greg Sharrow states, “Welcome to Vermont lines up squarely with our goal of making Vermonters from all walks of life visible to one another.”

“Welcome to Vermont” is also an integral part of one of the Center’s current, major initiatives, the “New Neighbors Music Project.” Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Vermont Community Foundation, the “New Neighbor’s Music Project” records traditional musicians from New American communities across the state with the goal of creating a Website and curriculum to bring this music into Vermont schools. “Mira’s film creates a human connection for students,” says Sharrow, “through intimate, personal accounts it opens up the experiences of these resettled people, creating a space for discussion about what it means to be American.”

On March 28 in Burlington at Bishop Booth Conference Center and May 2 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center the Vermont Folklife Center will host two workshops for educators on implementing the “New Neighbors Music Project” in the classroom. Niagolova, along with educators and representatives from various Vermont New American communities, will participate in facilitating these workshops.

Presented as collaboration with O.Z.'s Adult Education and Social Action Committees.

This film tells the stories of a number of new immigrants to our state. They share the stories of how and why they came to Vermont, the challenges they have faced since their arrival, the rewards of their new lives, and how their ways of life have both changed and remained the same. Welcome to Vermont aims to look beyond the statistics and offers an insightful perspective of life of forcefully displaced people once they achieve their ultimate desire to resettle in the US and live the American dream. The documentary reflects on issues of adaptation, identity, assimilation and diversity through an intimate look at the lives of a few families from Bosnia, Somalia, Iraq, and Rwanda.

The film is FREE with donations welcome.
